Dermaplaning

Manual exfoliation with a sterile blade, clearing away dead surface cells and vellus hair for a smoother finish.

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation performed with a sterile, single-use blade held at a shallow angle and drawn across the skin in short, light strokes. It clears away the outermost layer of dead cells together with the fine vellus hair, sometimes called peach fuzz, that sits on the surface of the face.

The appointment begins with a cleanse and an assessment under magnification. The face is then dermaplaned section by section, followed by a soothing mask, hydration and sun protection. The blade never goes deeper than the surface, and most clients find the technique comfortable, describing a light scraping sensation rather than any discomfort.

Skin feels immediately smoother and looks brighter, and makeup and skincare apply more evenly afterward, which is why dermaplaning is often chosen before an event. It is also a useful option for clients who want visible exfoliation without acids, or whose skin does not tolerate them.

Suitable for

  • Dull or uneven-looking texture
  • Fine vellus hair on the face
  • Skin that does not tolerate exfoliating acids
  • Before an event, for smoother makeup application
  • Dry or normal skin without active breakouts

Aftercare

Freshly dermaplaned skin is more exposed to the sun, so a broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential every day and should be reapplied outdoors. Avoid retinoids, scrubs and exfoliating acids for five to seven days, skip heavy exercise, saunas and swimming for 24 hours, and do not touch or pick at the skin. Mild pinkness afterward is expected and typically settles the same day.

Dermaplaning is not performed over active breakouts, open or irritated skin, or on very sensitive or reactive complexions. If this applies on the day, Dr. Kerri will suggest an alternative at the assessment.

Frequently asked

About dermaplaning

Will the hair grow back thicker or darker?

No. Vellus hair is cut at the surface of the skin, which does not change the way it grows. It returns as it was over the following weeks.

Does dermaplaning hurt?

No. The blade is held at a shallow angle and used with a light touch; most clients describe a mild scraping sensation, similar to a gentle exfoliating tool. There is no downtime beyond a little pinkness.

How often do clients return?

Many clients return every four to six weeks, once the surface cells and vellus hair have naturally renewed. Dr. Kerri advises each client individually; skin that is dry or sensitive may suit a longer interval.

Can dermaplaning be combined with another treatment?

Sometimes. A gentle enzyme or a mild peel is occasionally paired with dermaplaning when the skin is well suited to it. Whether that is appropriate is decided at the assessment, never in advance.
